Location of Khao Yai national park on the map of Thailand

Our herping tours in Khao Yai national park are available as daytrips or multi-day tours.

During the day we will explore the national park by car, and go out on foot in areas where we hope to find snakes, lizards, frogs and other herps.

At night we will go on a night walk in an area outside the national park boundaries.

Why our herping tours?

Even though not the highest species count of any park in Thailand, Khao Yai national park is nonetheless a great location to visit. For several species this is the westernmost range, and yet it is easy to reach from Bangkok. This includes species like the Vogel's Pit Viper (Trimeresurus vogeli), Indochinese Water Dragon (Physignathus cocincinus), the Nganson's Bronzeback (Dendrelaphis ngansonensis), the Gibson's Wolf Snake (Lycodon gibsonae), and the Khao Yai Odorous Frog (Odorrana indeprensa). Also the stunning Oriental Vine Snake (Ahaetulla prasina) is not the typical green in this region, but either silver-grey or yellow-orange in colour. On the night walk there is more chance for another viper, the Large-eyed Pit Viper (Trimeresurus macrops), and of course there is more.

Khao Yai has plenty of good hotels and other facilities. And besides the reptiles and amphibians, you may see some other interesting wildlife as a bonus.

Why Khao Yai national park as a tour destination?

Our enthusiastic tour guides leading our tours in Khao Yai national park will bring you closer to Thailand's amazing wildlife. The park is one of the country's greatest natural highlights. The perfect combination of wonderful scenery, amazing wildlife, and ease of access. We often hear from our guests, that the Khao Yai tour turned out to be the highlight of their travels in Thailand. It can be yours too!

What are the available tour activities in Khao Yai?

Pileated Gibbon in Khao Yai national park
Pileated Gibbon (Hylobates pileatus) female in Khao Yai national park. Unlike the White-handed Gibbons (Hylobates lar) the Pileated Gibbon is quite an uncommon sight. An encounter with these acrobats is always a delight on our tours.

Wildlife watching is the main theme of all our Khao Yai tours. It is a huge nature park and there is enough to do to keep you busy for multiple days. One of the activities are jungle walks. Walking in the forest while listening, smelling, and scanning the surroundings for any possible signs of wildlife. A falling seed, scratches on a tree, the scent of an elephant, a territorial call of a gibbon; anything that could lead to a close encounter with Thailand's charismatic wildlife. But often enough the safari drives tend to be more successful, especially for the larger animals.

Quite often people indicate that they would like to focus on the wildlife watching instead of e.g., visiting a waterfall. However, the roads in the park happen to lead to these scenic locations, and it's fairly common that wildlife is encountered either on the way to, or even at these locations. Depending on the tour package, several of the major scenic sights will be visited, and on some tours we will go out in the evening for a short night drive using a spotlight to look for nocturnal wildlife.

Wrinkle-lipped Free-tailed Bats near Khao Yai national park
The daily migration of the Wrinkle-lipped Bats near Khao Yai is an amazing phenomenon.

Even though outside the national park, another great spot is the bat cave where an extraordinary event takes place every evening at sunset. Millions of Wrinkle-lipped Bats emerge from a cave to forage far afield. The seemingly indefinite river of bats is an amazing sight that should not be missed.

If you'd like to experience all these activities, our 3-day wildlife tour package is your best option. But if time is limited, even a day-trip is still worth it to get an introduction to Khao Yai's wonderful natural world.

Wildlife watching in Thailand
We encountered this rare Dhole feeding on a Sambar deer carcass on one of our wildlife tours in Khao Yai national park. The pack had killed the Sambar on the night before.

Where is the national park located?

Khao Yai national park lies at just 2.5 - 3 hours Northeast of Bangkok. The park is easily accessible, the infrastructure in the park is good and besides Khao Yai's proximity to Bangkok, it is easy to reach from Nakhon Ratchasima, as well. Our tours start from Pak Chong, a town to the north of the park. And we are able to organize transfers from Bangkok, and other places.

When is the best time for tours in Khao Yai?

Indochinese Water Dragon (Physignathus cocincinus) in Khao Yai national park
The Indochinese Water Dragon, Physignathus cocincinus is one of the amazing animals you are more likely to see on a Khao Yai tour in the wet season.

The park is accessible throughout the year, and tours can take off every day of the year. But booking in advance is recommended!

Every season has its own advantages. The months November to February are often dry and cool in Khao Yai. Bring a sweater, it can get cold in the early mornings/ evenings.

Even in the months March to May it is a good area to escape from the heat of the surrounding region.

The wet season is from June to October, a great time to visit because the entire jungle seems to come alive. The waterfalls are more impressive, the forests are lush and green, and warmth- and moist-loving animals are more often sighted in this season.
